Dorothy (Dot) Helen Whitney, 91, of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2023, surrounded by family at Research Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, March 2, 2023, at 11:00 AM, visitation from 9:30-10:30 AM, and Rosary at 10:30 AM, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee’s Summit Rd., Independence, MO 64055, with burial following the mass at Forest Hill Calvary Cemetery, 6901 Troost, Kansas City, MO 64131.
Dorothy was born on March 14, 1931, in Kansas City, MO. She is preceded in death by her parents, Francis A. Nash and Mary G. (Maloney) Nash; Her husband of 58 years, Ferrill Ray Whitney; three brothers, Thomas (Lucille) Nash, Jack (Bonnie) Nash, and James (Ranell) Nash; and granddaughter, Kayla Whitney.
Dorothy is survived by a brother, William (Judy) Nash; her six children, Lori (Fred) Jonas, Carla (Joe) Salisbury, Christopher (Anna), Daniel (Julie), Thomas (Margie), and William (Karie) Whitney. She had 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and an abundance of friends, especially Don and Mary Lou Hennier.
Dorothy attended East High School, where she was voted “best female athlete” her senior year. Upon graduation in 1948, she met and married the love of her life, Ferrill Ray Whitney, they were united in marriage, November 25, 1950. Dorothy worked as an administrative assistant for Sears Roebuck, as well as several churches, and Catholic Charities. Her most rewarding and accomplished job was raising her six children for which she was most proud. She was a parishioner of St. Mark Catholic Church and formerly served as an Altar Society member of St. Michael Catholic Church and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Dorothy was a devout Catholic and served her Lord well in her ministries as a lector and Eucharistic Minister. She also was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion Tirey J. Ford Post 21. She loved being with her children and grandchildren, traveling with friends and family, spending time at Lake Lotawana and visiting family at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Special thank you for the nursing care she received at Research Medical Center in the Neuro ICU and the 7th floor Stroke Center, as well as Crossroads Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her name to St. Mark's Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee’s Summit Rd, Independence, MO 64055 or Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph, 4001 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. #250, Kansas City, MO 64130.
