Donald H. Mnookin, 77, Leawood, KS passed away unexpectedly on March 14, 2015 at St. Luke’s South Hospital. He was born on April 22, 1937 in Kansas City, MO, the only child of Dr. Samuel and Emilie Bohn Mnookin. Don was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area. He graduated from Southwest High School, class of 1955 and from Yale University, class of 1959. He joined the United State Coast Guard and was an active reserve member for 17 years, retiring as Lt. Cmdr.
Don was in the packaging business and retired from Stone (Smurfit-Stone) Container Corp. in 1995 as General Manager of the Liberty and Blue Springs plants. He was with Stone for 39 years.
Don was a member of The New Reform Temple, Temple Israel, Oakwood Country Club, the Society of Fellows of the Nelson-Atkins Museum, Honorary Fellow of the Truman Library Institute, charter member of the WWII National Museum, the US Naval Institute, Edgewood HOA Board, and the Kansas City Yale University Alumni Association. He was always a voracious reader, innately curious and ready to discuss any topic, sometimes both sides of the issue. He felt that a day without learning something was a wasted day. Don was indeed one of a kind; a warm, loving generous man with a quick wit, great sense of humor and, on rare occasion, a sharp tongue. He will be greatly missed by many.
Don was predeceased by his parents and beloved daughter, Stephanie Mnookin. He is survived by his loving wife, Diane Igoe Mnookin, Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law Mike and Diane Igoe and their children; Carol Amiri, Christopher Igoe, and Louis Igoe, and grandchildren. Cousins, the Norman and Diane Arnell Family, other cousins, many friends and neighbors.
Services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 18th at McGilley State Line Chapel with burial immediately following in Rosehill Cemetery, 6900 Troost, Kansas City, MO. The family requests no flowers. Should you wish, please send donation to the charity of your choice.
Now go out there and learn something.
