Diane Nelson

Diane was born on October 18, 1938, in Clinton, Oklahoma to Lenora Pauline Thomas and Gayle Vernon Walker. After growing up in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Diane moved to Kansas City where she met Norman Lee Nelson, a Patrolman with the Kansas City Missouri Police Department. Diane and Norman were married on February 8, 1964, at St. James Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri. They were married for 43 years before Norman’s passing in 2007. Diane and Norman had two sons together - Mike and Gary.

Diane was proud of being policeman’s wife and a stay-at-home Mom, the job she cherished above all else. Diane shared her love of country music with Mike and Gary and they relished making her laugh at their many pranks and misadventures. And, oh, how they laughed together! Diane loved playing board games and taking long walks with her grandchildren. She made sure every holiday and every visit had plenty of photographs taken and loved making her homemade pizza for family get togethers.

Diane is survived by her beloved sons Michael (Jeni) Nelson of Sunrise Beach, Missouri and Gary (Angela) Nelson of Holts Summit, Mo.; by her four grandchildren Carissa (Scott) Casida, Blake Nelson, Derrick Nelson and Clayton Nelson and three great-grandchildren.

A visitation for Diane will be held Thursday, September 7, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at McGilley & Sheil Funeral Home, 11924 East 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64133. A funeral service will occur at 2:00 PM. A committal service will occur Thursday, September 7, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Brooking Cemetery, 10004 E 53rd St, Raytown, MO 64133. Lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the American Stroke Association in Diane’s memory.
