Charles “Charlie” Leslie Greene, age 91, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on August 4th, 2016 at home from congestive heart failure & kidney disease. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10th, 2016 at the Red Bridge United Methodist Church, 636 E. 117th St., KCMO. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Moriah Cemetery South, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO.
Mr. Greene was born on February 12, 1925, in Kansas City, MO to Charles Oscar Greene and Lottie Mildred (Leslie) Greene in Kansas City, MO. Charlie was a 1943 graduate of Northeast High School. He then earned a B.S. in Education at Northwest Missouri State College (Maryville) majoring in History and minoring in Industrial Arts. He taught in KCMO public schools and met Marilyn Leona McCarty, also a teacher at Horace Mann School. They married on August 16, 1952. He did some graduate work in counseling at M.U. (Columbia). Later he took courses at CMSU (Warrensburg) in Industrial Safety. After a few years teaching, he went to work as a switchman for the Santa Fe Railway for one year and KCS Railway for 32 yrs. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Norene June (Greene) King. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn (McCarty) Greene, daughters Diane K. Greene, Janice M. Greene, Alice E. (Greene) Boinski and son-in-law R. “Mike” Boinski; sister-in-law Jolora Jean (McCarty) Culbertson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He served in the U.S. Navy in W.W.II, as a Ship’s Cook, 3rd Class, in Okinawa 1943-1946.
He was an Eagle Boy Scout and a member of the tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was a 54-year member of the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge 446; the Scottish Rite; 46 years in Ararat Shriners 10 years and Greeter Unit 36 years; the Barbershop Harmony Society 43 years and the N.A.R.V.R.E. Railroad retirement club. He was a member of the Red Bridge United Methodist Church and sang tenor in the choir. He loved to play and perform the harmonica. He had a vest with several pockets for harmonicas in different keys, embroidered with music notes and “Harmonica Charlie” on the back. Charlie and Marilyn traveled to all 50 states and 30 countries.
