Barbara was born on September 25, 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Cyril Thornbrugh and Mildred Barton Thornbrugh. Barbara married her beloved husband, Jerry Coonrod on March 9, 1950 and was married for sixty-two years until his passing in 2012. They had one son, Brett Coonrod, of Kansas City, Missouri.
Barbara graduated from Ft. Scott High School and Ft. Scott Community College in Ft Scott, Kansas. She lived her entire married life in Kansas, residing in Ft Scott, Wichita, Pittsburg, El Dorado, Topeka and Lawrence. Besides being a devoted wife and mother, she was an executive secretary at Butler County Community College in El Dorado and at Washburn University in Topeka. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly, her friends and her dogs. She also loved to knit and shop. Barbara and Jerry traveled extensively in all parts of the USA where they especially loved the mountains of Colorado and enjoyed several trips to England, Ireland and Scotland. She was an avid fan of the University of Kansas basketball team and had season tickets for many years.
Survivors include her son, Brett Coonrod and his husband David Allen of Kansas City, Missouri, her beloved niece, Janan Fairman and her husband Dan, as well as her great niece Amy Hamm, her husband Robert Hamm and their daughter Sutton of Olathe, Kansas and her great niece Macy Cargnel, her husband Mike Cargnel and their children Beckett and Campbell of Prairie Village, Kansas.
Graveside services will be held at the National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 1:30 P.M. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Partners in Education Foundation, 124 W Central Ave., El Dorado, KS 67042 for the Coonrod Family Memorial Scholarship.
