Stanley “Stan” Lloyd Smith of Shawnee Kansas passed away on September 18, 2021. He was 74 years old. A visitation will be on Thursday, September 23, 2021 from 2:00-3:00 pm with a funeral service starting at 3:00 pm at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112. A graveside service will following the funeral at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made the Salvation Army, https://www.salvationarmy.org/. The Salvation Army is dear to Stan as he played for them on many different occasions.
Stan was born on May 3, 1947 to Lloyd and Nadine Smith. He attended and graduated from Tuner High School and then attended Kansas State Teachers College, now named Emporia State University. He graduated with his degree in Music Education. Stan then continued his education with taking graduate hours in Music Performance at Kansas University under his good friend Roger Stoner. The summer after graduation, Worlds of Fun opened and had open audition for musicians for a live band at the Tivoli Theater. Stan won a spot and that was the beginning of his professional career. He went on to play at the Starlight Theater, Kansas City Orchestra and he played with Mannheim Steamroller and the Temptations only to name a few. He would also sub for the Kansas City Symphony and was invited to play in the Crested Butte Music Festival alongside his friend, Phil Clark. He also had the honor of playing for many big name stars that came into town. Stan was a member of the Kingsmen, the band for the Kansas City Kings basketball team and with the band for the American Royal and Kansas City Chiefs Band. Stan then founded the Kansas City BrassWorks Quintet and played every holiday and special event at churches and weddings. He was also a part of the national champion Fountain City Brass Band and then later joined the FreeState Brass Band, Lawrence City Band, and Crossroads Orchestra.
Stan and Janet Pepperdine Smith were married in February 1970 and had three children; Stacy, Alex, Anthony. They then welcomed son-in-law, Michael Mason and daughter-in-law, Mandi Smith into their family. Stan was always thrilled when he had a chance to see his grandchildren, Tyler, Logan, and Brayden Mason and Merra Smith. He also enjoyed spending time with his three nephews and five nieces. Stan was a kind and generous man that was loved by so many and will be dearly missed.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Barbara and her husband Ernie; his nephew Jon; and best friend Charlie.
