Maxine was born July 5, 1919 in Coweta, Oklahoma on a Creek Indian Reservation to Elmer and Nettie Leona Brown. Growing up, Maxine worked at her father’s grocery store. She also worked at an airplane plant during WWII, and at her and her husband’s tavern. Maxine married James “Jimmie” Manis on November 19, 1938. She was an active member of Grinter Chapel UMC, and was involved with the Wyandotte County Historical Society and the Armourdale Association. Maxine was a Charter Member of the Wyandotte County Art Association and also served as their treasurer for many years. She was a talented painter and often gave lessons to aspiring artists. Maxine was also a seamstress and made many of the clothes and costumes for her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her friends and family and if it could be at their home at Lake Wabaunsee, all the better. Maxine had a kind and generous spirit, a beautiful smile, and will be greatly missed.
