Heaven welcomed a great man who impacted so many lives with his delicious cooking and his giant heart. John Boykin was born April 2, 1936 in Augusta, AR to Aaron and Emma Boykin. His parents, several siblings, and one child preceded him in death.
He moved to Kansas in 1952 where he remained until his passing on Sunday, March 29, 2020. John was united in marriage to Ruthe Davenport on August 9, 1958.
John was a Christian man. He was one of the founders and a longtime member of Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He later joined Rescue Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor W. T. Bland. He accepted his calling to ministry in 1985.
John worked for O’Connor Cadillac from 1961 – 1968 and soon after opened his own businesses, JB Body Shop and J & R Fish Market, which he co-owned with his son.
He was a gospel quartet singer. He was a member of the Midwest Harmonizers, Wondering Travelers and a lead singer for the Sensational Wonders.
John loved spending time with his family. He loved fishing and cooking. He was famous on both sides of the state for his greens, hot water cornbread, and those delicious sweet potatoes. He had the best heart and would help anybody with anything!
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 61 years, Ruthe Boykin; his children; grandchildren; great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; three brothers; Arthur Boykin (Jackie), Jessie Boykin and Don Baker (Carla), one sister; Emma Tyler all of Kansas City, KS; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The family has chosen to follow current pandemic guidelines in order to protect the health and well-being of family and friends and will not have a public service at this time. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
