George C. Martin, 92, of KCK, passed away January 4, 2013 at home. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 9th at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St, KCK. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, January 10th at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will follow the service in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
George was born January 16, 1920 in Ulman, Missouri to George and Ollie Gertrude Martin. He left school in the 9th grade to help on the family farm. Shortly thereafter, George joined the Navy and was stationed in the Pacific on the USS Pennsylvania during WWII. He moved to Kansas City in the late 1940s and started working for General Motors, where he worked for over 30 years until his retirement in 1976. George was an active UAW Local 31 member as well as a member of the VFW. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and watching most sports, especially the Royals, Chiefs and KU Basketball. George loved nothing more than packing up his fifth wheel and traveling or camping with his wife, Edith, and his daughter Charlene.
George was preceded in death by his wife Edith Bernice Martin, his parents, George and Ollie Martin, his five siblings, Nell Blize, Erma Hagen, Phil, Gail and Bill Martin, as well as nephew Johnny Blize.
He is survived by his daughter Charlene Elkins of the home, granddaughter Michell Perkins, grandson Michael Elkins and wife Rhonda; great-granddaughters, Ashley Ridgeway and Alexis Elkins; great-great-grandson, Carter Ray Ridgeway; nieces and nephews, Cathy Lowe, Connie Stanton, Christy Drury, Bill Martin, Midge McGee, Carrol Martin, Jim Martin and Gary Hagen; as well as many more family and friends.
