Ethel Lee (Manyon) Hund

Ethel Lee (Manyon) Hund, 97, of Bonner Springs, Kansas, passed away September 13, 2017 at Bonner Springs Nursing and Rehab. Visitation will be from 7:00-9:00p.m., Monday, September 18th at Chapel Hill – Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 19th at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Good Shepherd Hospice or the Cornerstones of Care – Gillis Campus, In Memory of Luke Andrew Nilges, 8150 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64114.

Ethel was born September 10, 1920 in Troy, Kansas to Pete and Sylvia Manyon. She was the second of four siblings. She grew up on the “County Farm” where her father was the caretaker of the grounds (a local nursing home). She always said, “I have got full circle”. She grew around many farm animals, but she especially loved her pony. She rode her pony to school which was in Denton, KS, just a few miles from Troy, KS. Which inspired a lifelong love of horses. Ethel enjoyed going to Big band dances, especially to Glenn Miller music. St. Joseph’s Frog Hop and Wathena’s Round House were her stomping grounds before moving to Kansas City, Kansas in her early 20’s.

She worked at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri, Russell Stover’s Candy in Fairfax, Missouri and 25 years at Deluxe Check Printing as an inspector where she retired from. Her first marriage to Walter Shields led to her first child, Jim (JW). She then marriage Cleo Longabach and had her second child, Jo Ann. While working her Mother, Sylvia helped out with the children. They always lived in places where there was room for animals and a garden. Ethel then met Francis “Frank” Hale at a dance in Independence, Missouri and they became very close friends for many years. They bought an 80-acre farm in Tonganoxie, Kansas, they enjoy fishing, trips to Branson, Missouri and one year went to the Dixie Stampede for New Year’s Eve. Frank passed away in 2009.

After her retirement, Ethel herself enjoyed traveling, especially her trip to see the fall colors out east. She also traveled to Wyoming (Yellowstone), South Dakota (Mount Rushmore), Los Angeles, Texas, Washington, D.C., New York, New England and Canada when she was involved with the Bonner Springs Senior Community Center. Ethel enjoyed a surprised birthday party with family to Atchison, Kansas that led to a haunted house tour where she was disappointed when she didn’t see a ghost. She also insisted on going to Las Vegas with her family for her 80th birthday. Ethel loved garage sales, playing bingo and casinos trips with friends and family. Ethel also loved antique dishes which she collected and would go to White Cloud, Kansas to sell. She moved to Bonner Springs, Kansas in her later years to be closer to her daughter and lived at the Nettleton Apartments where she became close friends with Carolyn Essary. When she could no longer live on her own, she moved to Bonner Springs Nursing and Rehab where her friend Carolyn was already living. Carolyn passed away early this year. Ethel made many friends there, especially the facility cat, named “Jackson” who was with her until the very end of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandson, Luke Andrew Nilges, her special friend Frank Hale; and brothers, James, John Henry, and Lester Manyon.

Ethel is survived by her daughter, Jo Ann; her son, Jim Shields and his wife Kitty; her niece, Cindy Haynes; as well as family and friends.
