Emma was born on August 12, 1935, in Kansas City, Kansas to Beatrice Rogers Johnson and George Johnson who preceded her in death. After Emma graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas in 1954, she went on to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and a licensed beautician.
Emma loved to help. She often traveled out-of-town to attend to relatives who were ill. Emma attended Kansas City Community Church until her health failed. In later years she enjoyed playing Sudoku and reading romance novels. She also enjoyed Hallmark Movies and game shows, her favorite being the Price Is Right. In fact, Emma was quite unique. For example, she could recite word-for-word the lines to the westerns Gunsmoke and Bonanza.
Emma was preceded in death by her sister Louise Jenkins, and her brothers Willard Rogers, George “Baby George” Johnson, Jr., Arthur Johnson, Sr., and Kenneth Johnson.
Emma is survived by her two children, Patricia “Pat” Lewis and partner Leonardo “Leo” Brown and Mary (Richard) Prim of Overland Park, Kansas; her sisters Karenza Murphy of Kansas City, Kansas, and Frances (Arthur) Nash of Hereford, Arizona; and four brothers Leonard “Nippy” Johnson, Paul (Bernice) Johnson, Stewart (Dollie) Johnson, and Donald (Kay) Johnson of Lawrence, Kansas. Emma also leaves a host of grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Lendel “Del” Brown, Jr., Joyce Lewis, Edward Lewis, Layla Simmonds, Kristopher Simmonds, Kamarie Prim, Kierra Prim; and great-grandchildren Lynnell Brown, Lendel Brown, III, Elizabeth Brown, Jeante Wilhite, Christopher Starks, Jayden Wilhite, Gabrielle White-Lewis, Mackenzie White-Lewis, Ja’Nadia Smith, and Julius Smith, Jr.; and great-great-grandchildren Jaxon Bias, Marley Bias, Darius Certain, Jr. and a host of nieces and nephews. Emma is survived by her former husband Reese W. Moore of West Virginia and James “Doc” Covington who preceded her in death. She also leaves two former sisters-in-law Joan Redmond of Kansas City, Missouri and Kay Moore of Kansas City, Kansas.
Emma will be remembered always.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark Baptist Church, 4300 E 31st Street, Kansas City, Missouri on March 6, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. with the Reverend Stewart Johnson officiating.
