Darla (Dee) Kaye Mitchell, 75, was born on July 27th, 1948 in Kansas City, KS and went home to be with Jesus late Sunday morning, December 17th, 2023. She was the youngest child of Dr. Roy Melvin Mitchell and Cleo Belle Mitchell (Kuss). Her older siblings are Patsy (Pat) Mardelle Mitchell McNeely, Roy (Buddy) Mitchell Jr., Gary Wayne Mitchell and David (Micky) Michael Mitchell. She sometimes joked that she thought her name was Pat, Bud, Gar, Mick, Darla (smile).
Dee graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1966 and spent a bit of time at Pittsburg and KU before going to work for the social security administration in Kansas City, MO. She was able to retire early from the government and volunteer at the school library where she attended church. She enjoyed reading, studying, watching educational videos and building with Legos to say nothing of her affection for her dog(s). Oh, and she never missed a KU basketball game! Dee was a wonderful person loved by more people and more deeply than she knew. She is survived by her daughter, Heather Mitchell, who will miss her more than words can express. To say that Dee was a completely devoted mother would be a vast understatement.
She is also survived by her sister, Pat, and brother, Mick, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces, great grandnephews and friends she still enjoyed seeing when we all gathered.
The Celebration of Life for Dee will be at Lenexa Baptist Church in Lenexa, KS on Friday, December 22nd at 3 p.m. Flowers are welcome at Lenexa Baptist Church, but Dee would also love it if you made a donation to Community Christian Academy in Kansas City, KS instead.
