Anna Marie Altman, 96, passed away September 28, 2013. She was the wife of Harold S. Altman. A visitation will be held Thursday, October 3, 2013 from 7:00-8:00 PM at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., KCKS. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to a charity of your choice.
Anna was born on February 6, 1917 to a large catholic Irish-American family in Wyandotte County, KS. They were poor working class people and she had 4 brothers and 4 sisters. She had a grade school education. She met Harold Altman and married him in the late 1930’s. She had one child, a son, on December 28, 1941. Shortly after the Second World War started, her husband rejoined the Navy and she went to work in the war industry in Kansas City. She had extensive help during the war years from her sisters and mother-in-law. During those years, she traveled with her husband to various Navy bases on the East Coast from Maine to South Carolina.
After the war years, Anna returned to being a housewife in Kansas City, KS. As her son entered grade school, she became a lunch worker in his school. She later worked as a restaurant worker then a factory worker before retiring. Prior to her retirement years, she raised her son; Harold Bruce Altman, helped her husband build houses, and helped her father and sisters whenever they needed it, working hard all her days.
