Born February 22nd, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, died peacefully, surrounded by family, October 12th 2023, at his home in Waimanalo. He was 73. He is survived by his wife Ely Lundquist, their children Kaimana Riley (Sean), Patty Badiyo (Hawila), Pauline Kukahiko (John), Pelita Brack, and Sky Alaibilla (Edna);his 8 grandchildren Elyjah, Everly, Taurus, Tatum, Tyson, Natalie, Gerilyn, and Sierra; and his brother Barry Lundquist (Jeanne).
David’s family moved to Kailua when he was just two years old. He grew up as a true blue Kailua boy. Spending his time surfing, kayaking, sand sliding, sailing, and windsurfing in the bay; biking up and down Kalaheo; loading his friends and neighborhood kids in the back of a pick-up to find where the surf was breaking, or into town for lunch. He also loved mountain biking, always with one of his dogs keeping pace on the trail. His fun loving spirit was how he won over his wife, Ely. Their dates typically involved hiking the Lanikai pillboxes and kayaking around the mokuluas.
David’s home was open to everyone. He wasn’t known to turn away someone in need or someone with a big idea. If you were up for it, he could spend hours talking about music, history, business, religion, and politics. Really anything but small talk. He loved people and he loved his community.
David went to Kailua elementary school, then Punahou where he was an accomplished athlete in track, football, and wrestling. He graduated in 1968 and went on to study at Springfield College in Massachusetts before returning home to work with his father and develop Hardware Hawaii into the business we know today.
David also founded and organized the nation’s largest girl’s wrestling tournament, the Pa’ani Challenge. He believed that sports and music are essential for children. He often donated both his time and money to local sports programs and gifted countless children with ukuleles and guitars throughout his life.
A celebration of life for Pops will be held Friday, December 22, 2023 at Hawaiian Memorial Park Chapel, 45-425 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe, Hawaii 96744, with a chapel service at 10:00 AM.
