William Albert Gardner, 92, passed away June 19, 2023 in the care of Trustbridge Hospice at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center after a long and debilitating illness. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the son of Alvin and Dorothy Gardner. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mignon Roscher Gardner, loving daughter, Lisette Gardner Arias, son-in-law John Arias, granddaughters, Annaliese Williams, Gabriella Williams, step-granddaughters, Alexis Arias and Alyssa Arias.
He is predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Gardner Owen and brother, John “Jack” Gardner.
Bill lived a life of incredible accomplishments, while he cherished his family relationships. He was the epitome of a family man. His brilliant mind will forever leave a lasting mark not only on his family, but on the whole world.
After graduating from Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, he entered the Army during the Korean war. After his service, Bill went to work for Air Products and Chemicals as assistant chief scientist for a NASA project. Eventually this led to his idea to start his own business specializing in liquid helium after being told by his former employer that liquid helium was a strange element with certain characteristics that were not solvable. Since the word "can’t" was not in Bill’s vocabulary, in 1962 he founded Gardner Cryogenics Corporation (GCC). He engineered an insulating process now referred to as “Super Insulation” and developed super thermos containers to transport liquid helium, that which prior to his invention could not be accomplished. GCC also produced 11,000 and 15,000 gallon trailers that today have not been able to be duplicated. The liquid helium products were sold worldwide and even sent to the moon. Bill was known throughout the world as Mr. Helium. Eventually Gardner Cryogenics Corporation was sold back to his former employer and is now a division of Air Products and Chemicals.
Bill involved himself with various adventures and projects throughout his lifetime. He loved flying and was an instrumented rated pilot. At the age of 60, he developed a hobby business building experimental aircraft specializing in pressurized Lancair planes. Along with his love of flying, he had a passion for breeding and showing champion horses. His biggest thrill was to see his daughter, Lisette and wife, Mignon win a trophy showing their horses. Some of his fondest memories included witnessing his horses win National, World and Reserve World Champion titles in recent years.
Bill was a long time member of the New York Athletic Club, Society of the Four Arts, The Royal Poinciana Chapel Palm Beach, Le Club InterContinental of Palm Beach and The English Speaking Union of Palm Beach.
