Austin was a lover of all animals and was always rescuing them, especially all the dogs that became residents of Bughall Plantation in Union Springs, AL; Bo (aptly named after Bo Jackson) the kitty also resides there with Nonnie. Austin often celebrated birthdays asking that food donations for animals be brought in lieu of birthday gifts for himself. Austin had a big heart for loving all the many animals that were fortunate enough to cross his path.
Austin was a member of St. John's United Mathodist Church. He attended South Aiken High School where he was a member of Junior ROTC. He was also a member of St. Andrews Society, Aiken County Pony Club and Aiken Polo Club where he played on the polo team. He loved to fox hunt and participate in event horse shows.
Austin is survived and greatly missed by his loving parents, David Lamar and Ginny Austin Allen; maternal grandmother, Virginia Estes Austin and paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Marie Allen all of Union Springs, AL; an uncle, Don (Lila) Allen, Fayetteville, GA; two aunts, Beth (Chuck) Kimbrow, Sharpsburg, GA and Claire Austin, Montgomery, AL; a cousin, Grace Thompson, Aiken, SC and a host of cousins.
To celebrate Austin's life, the family received a multitude of friends on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 3:00 until 6:00 pm at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, Inc, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC. Austin then made his final journey back to Alabama via a detour to Auburn, AL for a War Eagle chant and a drive by Toomers Corner and the Jordan Hare stadium.
On January 16, 2012, a visitation was held from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at Gray Funeral Home in Union Springs. A funeral service was held the following day, January 17, 2012, 2:00 pm, at Frist United Methodist Church, Union Springs, AL with the Reverend David Stewart officiating. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery, Union Springs, AL under the direction of Mr. Bob Gray,Gray Funeral Home.
Austin's polo pony, Iceman, was part of the interment service following the casket to the burial site. The riding boots were facing backward indicating a fallen player.
