A Successful Man (Author Unknown)
That man is a success -
who has lived well, laughed often and loved much;
who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children;
who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
who leaves the world better than he found it;
who has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it;
who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.
Larry Douglas Powers was a wonderful, generous, brilliant, fun-loving and kind-hearted man who deeply loved his Family and Friends with all his heart. His warm hugs were deep, comforting and unforgettable. He was an inspiration to all who knew him, living life to the fullest having recently celebrated his 65th birthday.
Larry was born in Derry, New Hampshire on October 20, 1950. Growing up in Derry, he graduated from Pinkerton Academy in 1968. His passion for cooking began with side jobs as a teenage short order cook. He loved and admired his paternal Grandparents whom were role models for how he lived his life.
Larry served our country with selfless commitment, invention and distinction to insure our homeland's safety. Enlisting in the U.S. Army after graduating high school he was proud to have participated within the Honor Guard. He was stationed in Taiwan where he provided critical communications links to soldiers fighting in Vietnam. Honorably discharged from the Army, he built upon those experiences and went to work for Ford Aerospace as a satellite controller at the New Hampshire Satellite Tracking Station. This formed the foundation for his passionate and distinguished career working in the satellite industry.
Larry achieved his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1976. This was an amazing accomplishment, one of which he was extremely proud while working full-time, and raising a young Family. He truly enjoyed making the trips back to UNH, attending Homecoming’s in the Fall and loved to fondly reminisce about his many wonderful memories. He further advanced his education by working toward a Master's Degree at Pennsylvania State University.
Larry began working for the Lockheed Corporation (now Lockheed Martin) in 1980 at the Blue Cube in Sunnyvale, California as a satellite controller. Missing the East Coast, he was able to move back to Virginia, and Pennsylvania for a short time, where he continued his 26-year career advancement in the satellite engineering and program management disciplines. Upon his retirement from Lockheed Martin he became a valued satellite technical consultant where his hard work and expertise earned him the title of "Distinguished Fellow”.
Larry had many passions and interests. He played pool, enjoyed wood-working and watching his beloved Patriots, however, it was his love of boating on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland that ”Captain Larry" enjoyed the most. The weekends provided a reprieve while working in the hectic Washington, DC area. He set a goal to make the challenging trip to Florida down the Intracoastal Waterway which he accomplished in the Fall of 2008 aboard his motor yacht, "My Lady Jane". His puppies, Chessie, Skipper, Hannah, Gretel and Chester always brought him great joy. His love of travel took him on world-wide adventures and his RV helped him see the USA and Family throughout the years. He recently finished an amazing 23-state summer trip on the RV, enjoying the beauty of our country and Ontario Canada.
Larry was known to all as a great cook and chef on the BBQ. He was a master at baking apple pies and generously enjoyed giving them as gifts. This provided fond memories for many of his Grandchildren. During the holiday’s, he loved dressing up as Santa for his grandchildren and the neighborhood children as well.
Larry’s Family was his proudest accomplishment and will continue to carry on his Family Legacy.
He is survived by the love of his life and best friend, Jane E. Powers, whom he wed on April 22, 1989. She fondly called him "Lamb Chop or LC" throughout their marriage where they were inseparable. They successfully raised four children: Laurie C. Ramge, Debra K. Beene, Jaimie L. Geiger and Jonathan T. Teed. He was the Family "rock" and a role model to all. He enjoyed loving, nurturing and spoiling his sixteen Grandchildren: Trystan, Vivian, Terin, Shai, Annika, Katja, Elsa, Autumn, Johanna, Lylah, Henry, Curran, Brayden, Sadie, Wesley & Liam. Larry is also survived by his Sister, Vicki L. O'Brien, and his Brother, Arthur H. Powers, Jr.
The world has lost a great man who was so full of life. He will remain in our thoughts and hearts forever.
