Debbie was born in the Bronx, New York on March 21, 1956. She lived in Northford, Connecticut until moving to Florida in 1984. She graduated from North Branford High School in 1974, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management from Quinnipiac University in 1982. She worked in various office management roles before pursuing a second Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Florida Atlantic University in 2003. She spent the remaining years of her career teaching grades K-3.
Debbie was a dedicated volunteer with the American Red Cross for more than 15 years, where she managed emergency shelters locally, and throughout the country when called upon. She also helped to lead a number of Girl Scout troops, for her daughters and later some of her students. She led one of her troops from elementary through high school and helped them earn their Silver award, which is the one of the highest honors an active Girl Scout can earn.
Survivors include her husband, David McKean; daughters Heather and Kimberly McKean; and siblings Maureen Gehring, Sandy Brandt, Alan Cohen, Cyndi Hopper, and Shelley Cohen.
A celebration of life will be held on March 25th, 2017 at Ocean Cay Park in Juno Beach, from 1-5pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Palm Beach chapter of the American Red Cross.
