Ruth Evelyn Wheeler Jones, 95, peacefully passed from this earth on January 23, 2024, after a long and beautiful life. Born September 18, 1928, in Lowndes County, Mississippi, she moved to Jasper with her husband Dempsey in 1955. Family will receive friends Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. Service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Levi Sides will officiate.
A steadfast support to her family and friends, Ruth graduated from Caledonia High School in 1946 before marrying Dempsey after he was discharged from the Navy after World War II. The young couple moved to Auburn, Alabama, so Dempsey could attend Auburn University, and Ruth diligently worked to help him through school.
Together, Ruth and Dempsey raised three children in Jasper: Rachel, Debbie, and Bill. Ruth was an active member of the Sixth Avenue church of Christ, where for decades she taught children’s Bible classes and worked tirelessly in food ministry, quietly serving and honoring families in need.
Ruth was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, doting over those she loved. She will long be remembered for her genuine affection for others, her appreciation of beauty, her long and happy marriage, and her love for her Savior.
Ruth was preceded in death by her faithful husband of 66 years, William Dempsey Jones; her parents, William Roy Wheeler and Annie Logan Wheeler of Columbus, Mississippi; four brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by her children, Rachel Jones Thomason (Tom, deceased); Debbie Jones Morris (Richard); William Dempsey Jones, Jr., “Bill” (Twyla); her sister, Ann Wheeler Howton; her sisters-in-law Josie Wheeler, Mary Wheeler, and Janet Wheeler; her grandchildren, Lindsay Falls Walker (Scott), Dr. Brad Morris (Jennifer), Kristin Falls Pratt (Neil), Beth Morris Soechting (Dustin), Jordan Jones (Annie), and Juliana Jones May (Jordan); nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
All who knew Ruth were blessed by her life of service and kindness and will miss her terribly.
