Family will be receiving friends on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, from 9:30 until 11 a.m., at Jasper’s First Baptist Church. Service will follow at 11 a.m., at Jasper’s First Baptist Church, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Dr. Michael Adams, Rev. Delmus Anthony and Dr. Buddy Thorne will officiate. Kilgore-Green Funeral Home will be directing.
John was born in 1929, in Jasper. He graduated Walker County High School in 1947, then attended Auburn University where he played football. Then he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean War and then retired from the Fire Department at Fort Rucker US Government, and also retired from serving in the National Guard after 33 years. John was a member of First Baptist Church Jasper, where he loved being a part of the Thorne Sunday School Class. He was a lifetime member of York Masonic Lodge of Jasper. Everyone knew him as “Uncle John”. He loved his family and watching Auburn Football. He will be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Jerre Louise Wilson and Jane Gibson Wilson; parents, John Coleman Wilson, Sr. and Martha Dawn Lakey; and sisters, Mary Virginia Wilson Lightsey and Doris Ann Wilson Odom.
He is survived by his children, Joseph Wilson Smith (Simone) of Calif., John Coleman Wilson III of Calif., and Jerre Jean Holman (Bob) of Dothan; stepson, Bill Gibson (Candy) of Jasper; grandchildren, Heidi Swank, Deric Smith, Jillian Backen, Jenna Wilson, Kristin Myers, Jordon Holman, Grant Gibson, Gaines Gibson; several great and great great grandchildren; nephews, Bob Odom, Julius Lightsey (Carla); nieces, Judy Estes, Jenny Odom Cossey (Melvin) and a host of great nieces and great nephews and many friends.
The family would like to say a special thank you to all the caregivers and staff at Shadescrest Health Care.
Pallbearers will be Julius Lightsey, Walker Lightsey, Mike King, Bob Odom, Jack Odom and Coleman Cossey.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Jasper’s First Baptist Church.
