Margaret J Whaley of Raleigh, NC and a former lifelong resident of Jacksonville passed away on July 1, 2015. She was born in Clayton, NC on September 30, 1922 to Ray and Agnes Johnson. Her father’s position as Superintendent of the former prison camp located just outside Jacksonville brought the family to Onslow County during her early childhood. She graduated Jacksonville High School in 1940 and except for time spent in Wilmington during the war years resided in Jacksonville until 2012. She worked in the Onslow County Tax Collectors Office for 30 years when it was a one room office in the old courthouse retiring in 1985. She was preceded in death by her husbands Homer C. King and Jack Whaley. She is survived by one sister Betty Newquist of Santa Clarita, CA; sons Bill King and wife Rosalyn of Morrisville, NC, Jack Whaley and wife Fang of Chapel Hill, NC, and Gary Whaley of Creedmoor, NC; one daughter Iris Lawrence and husband Lee of Winter Haven FL; four grandchildren, Michael King and wife Elizabeth of Denver CO, Jeffrey King and Laura Bagwell of Eatonton, NJ, Ashley Herzich and husband Scott of Durham, NC; two great grandchildren, Brendan and Caitlinn King of Denver, CO, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church. She was a dedicated caregiver from early childhood when she would visit the county home to read to the residents, as well as write letters for them to brighten their days and let them know they were loved. Later while working full time she cared for her father Ray and her mother Agnes, followed by husband Homer, and after retiring husband Jack. Funeral services will be held Tuesday July 7 at 11AM, Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville, Reverend Jack Marshburn officiating, with interment to follow at Onslow Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
