Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 1, at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville.
James attended Georgetown High School, later graduating from Jacksonville High School. He then attended Fayetteville State University, where he received his degree in Health/Physical Education. Currently, he had over 35 years of teaching experience as a Physical Education teacher in the Onslow County School System, also serving as an athletic coach early on in his professional career. He also currently had over 30 years of service with the Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department, where he was currently the District Coordinator for the Richlands District Athletic Leagues. In both these vocations, he was close to what he enjoyed most in his life—sports.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Mellease Brown, and by his father, James Wornlee Hellum.
Survivors include two daughters, Crissie and Amber Brown of Jacksonville, North Carolina; two sons, Wesley Brown and his fiancé, Alana Eichman of Coral Gables, Florida, and Brandon Brown of Chicago, Illinois; his mother, Mary Alice Williams of Jacksonville, North Carolina; one sister, Joyce Montgomery, of Beulaville, and two brothers, Willie and Melvin Mackey, both of Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., on Monday, March 31, at Johnson Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
