Suzanne Dussinger, age 77, passed away peacefully on Monday October 12th at Brooks Bartram Crossing in Jacksonville, FL. She was born on February 28th, 1943 in Mystic, IA as the second child of Gilbert and Lorraine Porter. Following the completion of a Radiological Technology program in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she relocated to the Chicago area to work as an X-Ray Technician at Evanston Hospital. She met her future husband, Jay Dussinger, at the hospital employee picnic, and they were married on September 30, 1967. In 1986 they relocated to Seminole, Florida with their two son’s Patrick and Stephen. Suzanne was full of life, and treasured spending time with family and friends. Always up for an adventure, she is remembered as someone who would light up a room with her warm, engaging personality, and was a friend to all. She never took herself too seriously, and could often be found smiling and laughing. She was famous for never forgetting a birthday – always getting a card out well in advance. In her later years she enjoyed keeping in shape by walking on the beach and collecting seashells, often remarking about the tranquility and beauty of beaches. She also developed a fondness for crossword puzzles, and could regularly be found in the morning at the kitchen counter with a warm cup of coffee looking for that “one last word”.
Suzanne was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in 2016, and through the toughest days of chemotherapy was still able to keep a positive attitude and smile on her face. She was a deeply religious person, and found great comfort in her faith during this difficult time. Perhaps her greatest earthly motivation to fight on came from her three grandsons, Sammy, Travis, and Reed, who she loved dearly and were the source of great joy for her. She happily took every chance she had to show off pictures and tell stories about the three boys who lovingly called her “Grandma”. She also enjoyed cooking her signature lasagna for them and the entire family at every opportunity possible.
Suzanne’s memory and spirit will be cherished and kept alive by her loving husband, Jay, along with her son’s Patrick, his wife Elizabeth and son Sammy, and Stephen, with his wife Beth and son’s Travis and Reed. She is also survived by her sister Joan Moorman, and her brothers Jim Porter, Tim Maletta and Roger Maletta, along with many of cousins, aunts, uncles, and other relatives.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, a small graveside service will be held for family and close friends on Saturday October 17th at 2:00 at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville.
