Sheryl Marie Oxford was born on July 9, 1957 in New Orleans, Louisiana to James and Cleo Oxford. As a child, she attended and graduated from Christ the King Elementary School. Sheryl learned to play the organ at home while she was attending elementary school and actually wrote a few songs of her own. In 1975, she graduated from Sandalwood High School and then attended college at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Sheryl worked in many different roles in the Insurance industry for over 30 years. She worked as a Systems Analyst and an Assistant Branch Manager for AIG Insurance Co. Prior to working full time for AIG she obtained her insurance Broker License and opened her own Agency. She eventually took a disability retirement from AIG. During her employment with AIG she got to travel to many places including London.
In 1982, she married Sam Harris and was a loving and loyal wife to him until his passing on November 25, 1997. On October 17, 1985 and March 20, 1990 respectively, she welcomed her 2 children, James and Megan Harris, who were the most important part of her life.
Sheryl was a devoted mother and a “neighborhood mom” to the local children of the Glynlea / Grove Park / Holiday Hill area. She always opened her doors to everyone after baseball practices and games and treated them like family. She was always the “team mom” for all the many baseball teams that her son played on. Sheryl was also an avid poker room member and “always held pocket aces” when playing Texas Hold Em. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Sheryl enjoyed many vacations, casino trips and most of all, giving all the treats to her 3 beloved dogs, even though they were on a diet.
Sheryl is survived by her father, James Oxford; her two children, James Chatt Harris (Raluca) and Megan Harris (Jean); three half-children, Tim Harris (Tracy), Rick Harris and Marci Isacs; two siblings, James Oxford Jr. and Sandra Congdon (Steve), many nieces & nephews and her three dogs, Abby, Rambo and Molly. She is preceded in death by her husband, Sam Harris; her mother, Cleo Oxford; her half-son Robby Harris; and her half-son-in-law Richard Isacs.
