Robert Hoover Moffitt was born in Oakley, Tenn. on Oct. 10, 1928 to Zula Mae and Charles Moffitt and moved frequently between Virginia, Florida and Oklahoma. After graduating from Roseville High School, near Essex, MD, he chose to serve in the US Air Force between 1946 and 1949. Upon discharge, Bob attended the University of Miami (Florida) graduating with a degree in Chemistry and began his successful career manipulating the elements from the Periodic Table first in the Bahamas and ending in Brunswick, GA at the Brunswick Paper Mill. Bob is predeceased by his parents; first wife, Mary Kelley; sister, Francis Moffitt Easter and his son, Robert Kelley Moffitt. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda Pickett Dahl Moffitt; daughter, Teresa Moffitt; grandsons, John William Manson, Jr. and Hunter Garland; great grandsons, Aaron Kelley Manson and Ayden Michael Manson; stepson, Eric Christopher Dahl; stepdaughter, Amy Dahl Wood (Joe Wood) and his best little buddy, 2 year old Owen Eric Wood; honorary stepdaughter, Chrissy (Roger) Hawthorne; honorary step granddaughters, Abbie and Amanda Hawthorne; honorary stepson, Ted Escalante (Lisa) and honorary step grandsons, Nicolas and Cristiano.
Besides his family, Bob had two other loves; flying and running. He told many tales of flying his small plane around the islands when he lived in the Bahamas, having to divert to Cuba with his wife and dog and being met by armed military, landing on beaches and another time barely skimming over the Rocky Mountains on a trip west. He was Captain of the Brunswick Civil Air Patrol and always a great American patriot.
Running was Bob’s passion. For years, he seemed to have a race almost every other weekend and always placed at or near the top. He often won his age group and added many shirts, sweatshirts, medals, ribbons, cups and coffee mugs to his collection. His Trophy wall fills our office with wonderful memories. In 1993 at age 65, he finished the Boston Marathon and, then, did it again in 1994! The last few years he has run and walked with his Ed Austin Park friends every morning. He took great pride in running 5 to 6 miles until recently when, much to his chagrin, was forced to reduce it to walking 3 miles each day right up until the day before he became ill. Following his runs or walks and breakfast, he intently followed and anguished over the ups and downs of the stock market each day and was a great stock picker.
Bob was a quiet, introspective man who loved deeply and lived his life with integrity and honor and was especially concerned with nature and the future of our great country. To honor Bob, give your loved ones extra hugs and care, plant a tree in his name or donate to one of Bob’s favorites charities; The Nature Conservancy, the St. John’s Riverkeeper, the Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, Hospice of NE Florida, the Hubbard House, Wounded Warriors and K9’s for Warriors.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 10, 1:00 PM at Ed Austin Regional Park in the Police Athletic League building, 3450 Monument Road.
