Ray Gordon Terry, 79, passed away February 9, 2012, in Jacksonville, Florida following a long illness. Ray was born on October 28, 1932 in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of William Harold "Bill" Terry and Elvena Sneed Terry. Ray graduated from Christian Brothers High School in Memphis and The University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. Ray is survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances; their three children, Ray Gordon Terry, Jr.(Martha), Franklin Russell Terry(Kit), and Frances Middlekauff Polley(Gordon); six grandchildren: Gordon and Taylor Terry, Katie and Maggie Terry, and Julie and Robert Middlekauff; his sister, Marjorie Terry Kadel, and brother Kenn Sneed Terry. He is predeceased by his brother William Harold Terry, Jr. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Lucy.
Pallbearers are Edward L. Baker, James B. Hughes, H. Blake Jackson and W. Lester Varn, Jr. Ray was honorably discharged as a Captain in the U. S. Air Force where he was Inter-Service Golf Champion and Air Force Golf Champion. Ray joined his father's automobile dealership, Bill Terry Buick, and was President from 1976 until 2005, past President of the Florida Automobile Dealers Association and Jacksonville Automobile Dealers Association. He was Past President of Timuquana Country Club, member of the Florida Yacht Club and Member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Ray was an accomplished golfer with many winnings which include: City Prep Champion-Memphis, 1953 Biltmore Forest Champion, six time City Champion-Jacksonville, Florida State Amateur, five time Amateur Qualifying, nine time Timuquana Country Club Champion and six time San Jose Invitational Champion. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, February 16 at 1:00pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Some Place Like Home, 3930 Novaline Lane, Jacksonville, Florida 32277 or Northeast Florida Community Hospice, 4114 Sunbeam Road, Bldg. 400, Jacksonville, Florida 32257.
