Michael G Hutchens

Mike Hutchens, local insurance executive, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2015, following a brief illness. He was surrounded by his brother, Sandy, as well as several close friends and co-workers. Mike was born on January 2, 1948, in Mt. Airy, NC, to Frances Gwyn Hutchens and Sandy V. Hutchens, Sr. He attended Mt. Airy High School, where he excelled on the basketball court and graduated from Catawba College, Salisbury, NC.

In 1971, while employed as a marketing representative with Spencer's Children's Clothing company, Mike relocated from his hometown to Jacksonville, Florida. During that time, he also served honorably in the National Guard. Following the sale of Spencer's, Mike made a career change and entered the insurance industry. He was initially partnered with the William Shank agency and subsequently joined the Greene-Hazel Insurance Group in 2001, where he remained affiliated until his passing. Mike had a passion for his customers as well as his friends and co-workers. He was proud of his "Mayberry" roots and maintained a close relationship with friends and relatives from his hometown. He enjoyed the game of golf and loved to place a "little wager" on most any sporting activity. Hidden Hills Country Club was his home away from home, where he established many lasting friendships.

Mike was pre deceased by his parents and is survived by his brother, Sandy V. Hutchens, Jr, West Hollywood, CA; aunt, Frances Wolfe Gwyn; cousins, Sarah Jane Leach and Jean Gwyn Jones., Mt. Airy, NC.

A "celebration of a life well lived" cocktail reception, will be held in Mike's honor at Hidden Hills Country Club, Monument Road, Jacksonville, FL on Thursday, May 28th from 3-5 pm.
