Mary Wells Reeder, 96, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 22, 2022, in Jacksonville, FL. She was born in Portland, Arkansas, the daughter of Abner and Eva Wells on January 12, 1926. Mary was born again on November 12, 1950, when she received Jesus in her heart.
Mary was the youngest daughter of the following nine siblings who predeceased her: Joe Ben Wells (1912), A.D. Wells (1914), Maxine Wells Green (1916), W.H. “Peck” Wells (1917), Ruth Wells Traphagen (1919), Faye Wells Thomas (1921), Mary Wells Reeder (1926), Henry Wells (1927) and Milner Wells (1930). Family meant everything to Mary, and she was always delighted whenever the family could gather.
Mary was a loving wife, mother and Memaw. She married James E. Reeder on April 15, 1946, and they had a devoted marriage for 46 years until James passed away in 1992. Together they had one daughter, Jan Kathryn Reeder. Some years after James’ death, Mary reunited with a life-long family friend, Gene Tillerson and together they enjoyed many years of travel and companionship together until Gene passed away.
Mary adored her only grandson, Joseph James Gross. She loved him with all her heart, prayed for him daily and Joseph loved his Memaw with all of his heart.
Mary never met a stranger. She had friends from all walks of life, and she never stopped caring about and praying for anyone who was a friend. She was famous for making Pimento Cheese for everyone. She loved to play Bridge. She loved First Baptist Church and was a loyal member for 72 years. During that time, she served as a Sunday School teacher, Outreach Leader and Prayer Warrior.
A funeral service honoring Mary will be held Monday, August 29, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn, The Legacy Lodge, 4801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32207. Following the funeral service will be a committal service at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
