On March 28th 2021 Mary Josephine McGarry nee Lepore left her earthly bonds to meet her Savior and be in eternal peace. Mary Jo, as she was known to her family and friends, was 87 and died peacefully in her own home surrounded by her husband of 64 years, two of her three sons and her caretaker.
Mary Jo was raised by immigrant parents in the midst of the Great Depression and World War II, which taught her to be frugal and always grateful for what she had. Mary Jo mainly supported her husband, Jim, in his career but later on in life clerked at an insurance company, worked with children in a preschool setting and volunteered in numerous charitable events.
She was fond of playing Bingo at the Lions club, and her and her husband would make numerous trips to Biloxi and later in life travel extensively. It wasn’t all glad times as she saw her youngest child contract cancer and with the Grace of God and numerous trips to MD Anderson, it was put into remission, letting him have a full life, marry, have children and become a doctor.
Mary Jo was predeceased by her parents Angela and Gerardo Lepore, her sister Mary Lou Quarno, and a grandchild Ericka Lloyd.
She leaves behind three sons, James Jr. (Angel), Jerry, and Doctor William (Laura) McGarry, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She also leaves her caretaker of two years Yolanda Armstrong.
Mary Jo was a vivacious and fun-loving woman who will be deeply missed.
No visitation is planned, but Catholic mass and funeral rites will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11655 Fort Caroline Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32225 on Saturday, April 10 at 11:00 AM.
