Margaret "Peggy" Oswald

Margaret “Peggy” Oswald, 91, passed away peacefully February 2 after a brief illness. Born on Halloween, 1921, she spent her childhood on a farm near Warren, PA, the youngest of eight children. After graduating from nursing school, Peggy Oswald volunteered for active duty in World War II and served in the US Army Nurses Corps, stationed in England, France and Germany. In England, she nursed wounded Allied soldiers returning from the famous Battle of the Bulge. She was honorably discharged from the Army as a First Lieutenant in 1945. After the war, Peggy became a nurse anesthetist and moved to Jacksonville where she met her husband, Joe Oswald. They were married for 51 years before his death in 2001. Peggy Oswald spent more than 40 years as a registered nurse in Jacksonville and Sarasota before retiring from Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville. A devout Catholic, she was a long-time member of Assumption parish and a volunteer for the St. Vincent De Paul Society. An avid bridge player, Peggy played bridge several times each month until shortly before her death. She is survived by a daughter and son-in law, Gail and John Cavallo, a son and daughter-in law, Steven and Joani Oswald, a grandson, Steven Cavallo and his wife, Emily, a great grandson, Zachary Cavallo and many loving nieces and nephews

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5th with Vigil Prayers and Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. in Hardage-Giddens Funeral 4115 Hendricks Ave. Jacksonville FL 32207. There will be a calling hour at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 6, 2013 in the St Joseph Chapel of Assumption Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6th in Assumption Catholic Church, 2403 Atlantic Blvd. Jacksonville, with Father Fred Parke as Celebrant, followed by interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Peggy's name may be made to The American Lung Association of Northeast Florida, the St. Vincent DePaul Society at Assumption Parish or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida
