Mrs. Mamie Smith Bythewood was the daughter of the late James Smith and the late Elizabeth Hartley Smith. She will be remembered as The Matriarch of the Wesconnett Community and the AUNTIE TO ALL who came in contact with her. She was born on November 25, 1937 in Orange Park, FL. She was the younger of 2 children. As a child she enjoyed riding on a wagon, being pulled by a Billy goat. She attended the public school in Orange Park including #116 Morse Avenue and the Old Stanton High School.
Mamie met and married the love of her life the late Britt Bythewood on December 9, 1967 in Charlton County-Folkston, GA. Unfortunately, unable to have any children of their own they decided to help assist raising her brother’s 11 children and their offspring’s.
She was employed with the Department of Defense at Jacksonville Naval Air Station Commissary where she retired as Produce Clerk, working approximately 30 yrs/8 mos/29 days. After enjoying retirement for about 3 months, she landed a job of babysitting her grand-nephew A1C Jaylon Scott from 10 months old until, he went off to boot camp in July 2019.
Mamie grew up in church and because of her faith in God; she served as a faithful member of Greater Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor W.O. Tucker, Sr. Just like her father, Mamie sang and served in the Mass and Combined Choir. She participated in various events at the church such as helping with the Backpack Committee “Annual Backpack Give-away” and Clothes Drive.
She enjoys spending time with all her many nieces and nephews and others. She loved traveling with her close friends and family to various places. In her past time she loved going to the Lane Wiley Senior Center. While being called the “Neighborhood’s Auntie”, she was always willing to lend a helping hand and gave spiritual advice and made the best potato salad on this side of town.
