Lois Allen Price, 97, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, December 9, 2024, with family at her side. Lois was born to George S. Allen and Texas Ella Henderson on February 28, 1927 in Florala, Alabama. She graduated third in her class from Covington County High School in Florala (1945), and was elected to the National Beta Club in her junior year. Upon graduation, she attended Massey-Draughon Business College in Montgomery, Alabama on a full scholarship. It was there, where she was employed by Western Union Telegraph, that Lois met a young former Marine, Robert “Bob” Price of Jacksonville, Florida. Following a short courtship, they were married on May 13, 1946 at the Baptist Temple in Jacksonville, Florida and continued to reside in Jacksonville for the 62 years of their married life.
Lois loved her family, her church, and her community. She was a devoted mother of three children and nurtured the love of learning from an early age. She enjoyed involvement in their school activities. She was active in their schools’ PTAs, and served as PTA president at Ruth N. Upson Elementary. At Robert E. Lee HIgh School, she volunteered in the Dean of Girls office. Lois delighted in watching her children grow and blossom into adulthood and was so proud as one became a Doctor of Public Health Nutrition (Bobbette), one a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force (Rebecca) and one a practicing internal medicine doctor (Robert). As the years moved on, she praised God for the love, joy, and laughter that was added to her family with six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Lois was a long standing member of the Murray Hill United Methodist Church since 1953. She was the longest attending and oldest living member when she passed. She held various leadership roles in United Methodist Women, her Sunday school class and the Pastoral Committee. While her children were in school, she served as a counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Lois was instrumental in the growth of the Young at Heart (YAH) Ministry for Senior Adults, out of which was born a senior choir and a clown ministry. She participated in the YAH choir, was a past president, and served as the program chair for multiple years. She lived to witness YAH’s 38 years of fellowship and community service. Lois lived her life by “trusting in the Lord with all her heart” (Proverbs 3:5-6). Her deep and abiding faith in God through the years was both an example and a blessing to her family and her many friends.
Lois treasured her Murray Hill community, where she had lived in the same “little brick dream home” she and Bob purchased in 1949. She was a member of the Murray Hill Preservation Association since the 1970’s, served on the board of the The Friends of the Murray Hill Public Library, and remained a member of Friends of the Murray Hill Library.
Lois is survived by daughter Bobbette Jones; daughter Rebecca Kanter (Daryl); son Robert Price (Beverly); grandson Nathaniel Jones; granddaughters Rachel Kanter and Kelly Kanter; granddaughter Sarah Price Pauli; granddaughter Emily Price Frydrychowski (R.C.); granddaughter Celia Price Mead (Chris); five great-grandchildren; also nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
She was predeceased in death by her beloved husband Robert Earl Price; her parents; sister Cleo Allen Daniels; brother Edward M. Allen; brother Harold L. Allen; brother Clarence T. Allen.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Accent Care for the attentive home health services they provided in Lois’s final weeks and to Community Hospice and Palliative Care for the support and compassion they extended the family during Lois’s last few days.
A visitation for Lois will be held Saturday, December 21, 2024 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM followed by a memorial service from 2:00 - 3:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32205.
