Dr. Joseph Theodore (Ted) Wingard, Jr, of Jacksonville, FL, died peacefully in the presence of his beloved family on October 8th, 2021. Ted was the son of the late Tommie Davis and Joseph Theodore Wingard, Sr of Greenwood, SC. Ted graduated from Greenwood High School where he excelled in football, basketball, and track and field. He went on to play football as a quarterback at the University of South Carolina on a full athletic scholarship. Ted received his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, completed his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, and received a fellowship from Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA. After finishing his training, Ted moved to Jacksonville where he began practicing as a Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgeon, initially working at St. Vincent’s Hospital and then moving to Memorial Hospital where he operated for most of his career. Ted thrived as a surgeon for 33 years, performing over 30,000 cases. Ted was an avid sports fans, rarely missing a University of South Carolina Gamecocks or Jacksonville Jaguars football game, and enjoyed playing tennis, hunting, and travelling. Along with his late wife, Mary Gaile Edwards Wingard, Ted also loved hosting his family and friends at their vacation homes at Folly Beach, SC and Amelia Island, FL. Ted is survived by his children, Joseph Theodore Wingard, III and his wife Pam, Jonathan David Wingard and his wife Heather, and Katherine Wingard Sherman and her husband Nate; his grandchildren, Matthew Alexander Wingard, Jonathan Michael Wingard, Jonathan Ramsay Wingard, Joseph Theodore Wingard, Nathaniel Alden Sherman, Jr., and Beatrice Gaile Sherman; his brother Thomas Davis Wingard and his wife Gloria; and six nieces. Thank you to his loving friends who have been wonderful support over the years and especially in recent weeks. A celebration of Ted’s life will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Ave, 32210 on November 12th at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
