John Anthony Sullivan, age 87 passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021. John was born May 3, 1934 in Boston, Massachusetts to Lydia J. Sullivan and F. Joseph Sullivan. He grew up in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston and graduated from St. Ann's Catholic School and Cathedral High School. Following high school he entered the U.S. Navy and served his country from 1952 to 1957 aboard the carriers U.S.S. Coral Sea, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Saratoga. After his service in the Navy he attended Jacksonville University where he served as president of the Green Key Honor Society, editor of the school newspaper the Navigator, and was selected to attend a special summer program in his major at Harvard University.
After earning his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, he returned to Jacksonville University where he served as a professor of political science for over 30 years, until his retirement from full time teaching in 1999. He was appointed Professor Emeritus in 2011.
John is survived by his son John, daughter Meghan, son in law Tom LeBlanc, grandson Luke, nieces Kathy Childs and Elizabeth (Liz) Brooke, nephews John Crawford, John and Chris Sullivan, cousin Eddie Roche and many other grandnieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents, his wife of 52 years, Mercedes, and brother Joseph P. Sullivan. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew and loved him.
A funeral service for John will be held Friday, November 19, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Resurrection Catholic Church, 3383 University Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32277. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at 11:30 AM at Jacksonville National Cemetery, Lannie Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
