He was born in Jacksonville on January 8, 1933, the son of John Culp and Ruby Owens Featherston.
John attended Fishweir Elementary, John Gorrie Junior High, graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1949, and attended Emory-at-Oxford College, Massey Business College and Jacksonville Junior College.
He retired from CSX Transportation Company in 1990 as Assistant Vice President & Assistant to the President, concluding a 40-year railroad career which began with Seaboard Air Line Railroad in Jacksonville in 1950.
During his career he was located in Birmingham, Augusta, Columbia, Norfolk, Richmond, Jacksonville, and Baltimore, before returning again to Jacksonville in 1989.
Predeceased by Helen, his wife of 61 years; he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law John and Gloria of Jacksonville, David and Susan of Concord, NC and Thomas and Krissy of Glen Allen, VA; five grandsons Daniel, John, Ryan, Nick and Cory; four granddaughters Mandy, Emily, Crystal and Austin; sisters Ruby Wood of Franklin, TN and Helen Odom of Fayetteville, GA; and brother William of Rockingham, NC.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his bother Linton who lived in Fernandina Beach.
He was a member of Highlands United Presbyterian Church, 10900 McCormick Road, where his memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 preceded by crypt-side committal service at 10:30 AM at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens Cemetery, located at 850 St. Johns Bluff Road.
He requested no flowers and no memorials.
Visitation will be held Monday evening from 6 – 8 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Chapel Hills Funeral Home.
