She was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 1, 1932, and graduated from Landon High School in Jacksonville, Florida.
Joan was married to Dudley Sidney Thomas on January 22, 1953, until his death in September of 1977.
She was married to George Heber Weller, Jr. in August of 1985, until his death on May 29, 2015.
Joan was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida. Her faith in Jesus Christ and her love for family was apparent to all who knew her. She was a faithful prayer warrior – she prayed about everything and trusted God with the outcome. Joan excelled as a seamstress and sewed clothes for her three daughters when they were growing up. In later years, she loved to crochet and do shell art and she made afghans and shell mirrors for everyone she knew. She had a passion for gardening, especially her beloved roses, and Joan had vases of roses throughout her home that she hand-picked from her garden. Joan enjoyed boating and traveling with her husband, George. She kept organized picture albums of every trip and enjoyed sharing her travels through pictures. But the times she enjoyed the most were when she could host family gatherings and cook for everyone. Even after she went to live in an assisted living facility where she had no kitchen, she somehow managed to make key lime pies to give to people. She was a generous and caring wife, mother, and friend.
Joan is survived by a son, Michael Stephen Thomas of Jacksonville, FL, and three daughters, Debbie Ferguson (husband Michael Ferguson) of Ocala, Florida, Diane Mitchell (husband Chip Mitchell), of Jacksonville, Florida, Darlene Gray (husband Dennis Gray), of Annapolis, Maryland, and step-son, George Heber Weller, II (wife Barbara Weller) of Apollo Beach, Florida.
Her grandchildren include Adam Ferguson of Goodsmith, Tennessee, Tara Nielsen of Ocala, Florida, Adam Mitchell of St. Augustine, Florida, Ryan Mitchell of Jacksonville, Florida, Taylor Mitchell of St. Johns, Florida, Jennifer Aschliman of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Stephanie Gray of Annapolis, Maryland, Brian Weller of Madison, Wisconsin, and Rovin Calderon of Las Vegas, Nevada.
She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren and a sister, Shirley Shirey of Palm Coast, Florida.
