Jane Willis Tinney passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018 peacefully at home with family and loved ones by her side. Her faith in Christ was strong. She was loved by all who knew her. She was born on November 11, 1929, at home in Greenwood, Florida. Among her four siblings, her father described Jane as the "sweetest one". Jane was a graduate of Greenwood High School, and she married Charles Tinney on February 19, 1949. She was also a graduate from Florida State University in elementary education in 1952. She later received her master's degree in education from Kansas State University. She had a fruitful career as an elementary school teacher. Her skills as a seamstress were well known. She tatted, crocheted, and knitted for family and loved ones, and had a willing spirit and freely gave her time and talent to help others. She loved to volunteer at the Presbyterian Apartments where she lived. She freely gave her time arranging alter flowers at her church, sewing at Eileen's Workshop, line dancing, and playing card games with family and friends. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Keystone Sunday school class. Jane has been a gracious example to her family and a faithful witness to our Lord.
Jane is preceded in death by her parents Benjamin Risher Willis and Jennie Vera Bevis Willis; her husband Charles Tinney; and her siblings Carolyn W. Smith (Ralph), Ben Risher Willis, Jr. (Jeanie), and Elizabeth Watson (Harwell). She is survived by her children Dr. Carl Thomas Tinney (Candy) of Sacramento, California, Dan Willis Tinney of Belton, Texas, and John Pettus Tinney (Susan) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; her sister Mary Willis Petry (Richard); loving grandmother to Matthew, Ethan, Alissa, and Preston Tinney; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 225 East Duval Street, Jacksonville, Florida. The family will receive friends one hour prior beginning at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the 2:00 p.m. memorial service at the church. Pastor Tiffany McCall and Richard A. Petry, Pastor Emeritus will serve as officiants. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Jane's memory.
