James W. White, a second generation Floridian born in Jacksonville, received his secondary education at John Gorrie and Robert E. Lee High Schools. He held a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University and graduate degrees from Columbia University's School of International Affairs and Russian Institute and from Harvard's John F. Kennedy Center for Public Administration. During the Korean War, he spent three years as U.S. Naval Officer in Japan.
He joined the United States Foreign Service in 1956, and after a brilliant career, he retired as the U.S. Consul General in Melbourne, Australia with the rank of Career Minister. His seven overseas assignments in the Foreign Service took place in Asia, Europe, Latin America, ending in Australia. His training in foreign languages included French, Danish, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. A practitioner himself of fine arts (clarinet playing, choral singing, fiction and non-fiction writing, oil painting, and cooking), he was in his official capacities an active supporter of American artists and artisans abroad.
He leaves behind his loving wife Margaret, his children, Dr. Robert B. White (Julie Jacobson), William Whitesmith, James M. White (Pamela DeLeo), Damien Holton (Randall Holton).
A graveside service will be held at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Cemetery on Saturday, July 15 at 1 PM. Dr. Robert Morris of the First Presbyterian Church will preside at the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
