

JIn loving memory of James William Sumner, a devoted family man, distinguished veteran, and resilient soul who passed away on December 21st, 2023 at the age of 78. James led a life marked by courage, service, and love, leaving behind a legacy that will be forever cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
James was born on August 6th, 1945 and dedicated a significant part of his life to serving his country as a proud member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, he exemplified bravery and commitment, earning the respect of his comrades and the nation he so honorably served.
After a remarkable military career, James transitioned to civilian life, embarking on a new journey as a Long-haul Truck Driver. His strong work ethic and dedication continued to shine, reflecting his resilient and determined spirit.
In matters of the heart, James found a lifelong companion in his beloved wife, Martha Sue Sumner. Together, they celebrated 49 years of marriage, weathering the highs and lows with unwavering love and commitment. Martha's passing preceded James, leaving a void that he carried with grace until their reunion.
In his retirement, James discovered joy in the simple pleasures of life. He found delight in playing computer and video games, indulging in a pastime that brought him both relaxation and entertainment.
James was a proud father to his daughters, Kimberly DiGiorgi (Stan DiGiorgi) and Amanda Sumner. His love and support knew no bounds, and he took great pride in the family he had built. James adored his granddaughters, creating lasting memories and sharing in the joys of their lives. His legacy extends to his great-granddaughters, who will undoubtedly hear stories of his love and laughter for years to come.
He cherished the bonds of family, enjoying the company of his brothers and sisters in Jacksonville. Together, they created a network of love and support that enriched James's life with warmth and camaraderie.
A celebration of James's life will be held on December 28th, 2023 at 11:00 AM at North Jacksonville Baptist Church with a viewing prior at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to your favorite charity in James's honor. A committal service will occur Thursday, December 28, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
