Jim was a kind, well-spoken man with a sense of humor and a zest for life. He was looked up to by friends, family, and colleagues. He was born in Washington Court House, Ohio and attended school there where he graduated in 1955 from Washington Court House High School. After graduating he served in the U. S. Navy from 1955-1958 with an honorable discharge. After the Navy he started his sales career with Armco Steel where his job with Armco took him and the family to many states, settling in Alpharetta, Georgia where he served as Regional Sales Manager of Armco Steel until retiring after 30 years with Armco. After he retired, he went on to serve as Vice President of Sales for Inland Steel for 12 years retiring in 2001. When he started at Armco, he worked towards getting his degree at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and continued education at GA Institute of Technology and University of Oklahoma. Among his many accomplishments, Jim also served as a member of the Board of Directors and then President of the Southern Economic Development Council from 1974-1988 and voted an Honorary Life Member. Jim also served as a member of the American Economic Development Council and the Georgia Industrial Developers Association. In addition to his family, Jim loved playing golf and traveling with his wife Margaret.
Survivors include his 3 sons, Bill Newland (Tonia) of Saint Johns, Florida, Jeff Newland of Saint Johns, Florida, John Newland (Kristy) of Tallahassee, Florida, 7 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, sister-in-law Joan Hardin, and several nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife Margaret Campbell Newland, son David Edward Newland and his parents Delbert Newland and Rose McDonald Newland.
Services will be held at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32223 in the Julington Room on Friday, November 12, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please make a charitable contribution to the March of Dimes.
