Harold Jackson Rooks, age 87, passed away peacefully April 12, 2016 surrounded by his family. Harold was born August 8, 1928 in Tifton, Ga. where he grew up until joining the U.S. Navy in 1946. He enjoyed a 23 year career in the Navy and retired in 1968 as Chief Petty Officer. On a return trip home to Tifton, while on leave from the Navy in 1950, he met the love of his life Marie Tucker. They were married August 11, 1950. Knowing Harold was to know a truly gifted story teller with a wonderful sense of humor. He never tired of telling the stories of how he traveled the world with the Navy and took his family along for fun. From being based in San Diego, California to Nashville, Tennessee, living in Naples, Italy and London England, he so enjoyed telling of how he traveled the world. Upon retirement from the Navy, Harold settled his family in Atlantic Beach, FL and became an active member of the community. Shortly after relocating to Atlantic Beach, Harold and Marie became members of Community Presbyterian Church, where he was honored to hold the position of both Deacon and Elder of the Church.
Harold is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Marie; two sons, Herbert R. Rooks and Harold J. Rooks, Jr.; a daughter Deborah G. Rooks; sister, Mary Sweat; 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 11:00AM at Community Presbyterian Church, 150 Sherry Dr. Atlantic Beach. A private burial service with full military honors will take place at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens.
