George Henry Meyers, 76, passed away on August 25, 2013, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on March 23, 1937, in Portland, Oregon, to Herman and Rachel Sparhawk Meyers. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1955 and married his high school sweetheart, Janet Peck, in 1956. He served in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve for 35 years, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. He graduated from Oregon State University, where he received a B.S. in Animal Science and an M.S. in Dairy Cattle Production. He was an instructor at OSU and managed the Dairy Research Center for five years. He later received his Ph.D. in Business Management from LaSalle University.
In 1973 George and Janet felt called to missions and embarked on what would become a 40-year missionary/global development career. They served for nine years on the mission field in Ethiopia, Sudan and Guatemala. George’s travels took him to five continents and 62 countries as he imparted expertise, encouragement and insight to people in all walks of life. Janet was his faithful traveling companion and coworker in these endeavors. For the past 20 years George served in senior leadership roles at Go To Nations, a Christian missionary agency based in Jacksonville, Florida. He was an active member of New Life Christian Fellowship and Jacksonville Business Fellowship.
George is survived by his loving wife Janet; his son Daniel (Laurie) Meyers of Harrisburg, Oregon; his son Steven (Leslie) Meyers of Danville, California; his daughter Jennifer (Mark) Rice of Quartz Hill, California; and 13 grandchildren and one great- grandchild. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy (Lester) Braithwait; his sister Emily (Burnell) Krager; and his brother William (Lorre) Meyers. One brother, Jack Meyers, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at New Life Church, Jacksonville, Florida August 29, at 7:00 p.m. with interment at Oretown, Oregon.
