George was a West Point graduate class of 51, a member of the Corps of Engineers, a graduate of MIT with a masters degree in nuclear engineering and a distinguished military career before retiring to Jacksonville in 1970. After a brief stay at Goodwill Industries he was the Chief Purchasing Officer for Jacksonville under Mayor Hans Tanzler. He was the Associate Managing Director for the Jacksonville Electric Authority where he counts the coal fire plant as one of his accomplishments.
After retirement he taught his favorite subject, Algebra for several years at Florida Junior College of Jacksonville.
To his family he was known as our Dad, an avid golfer, supporter of the Jaguars, and husband to Granny Jaguar. He is best known for his honor and sense of humor. He was loved by many and sure to be missed by all.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Shirley (Ross) and his sister Marguerite (Peg) Wall. He is survived by his sister Marion (Mimi) Gehling, his three children Lawrence, a daughter Christine Kemper (Robert), his youngest daughter Patricia Harman Granger (William ), grandchildren Jason and Julie, and great grandchildren Maxmillion, Isabeau and Saraphie as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Thursday, May 1, from 5:00-7:00pm at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin with a rosary service beginning at 6:00pm. Funeral Mass be held Friday, May 2 at 10:00am in St. Joseph’s Historic Catholic Church, 4124 Loretto Rd. Interment will follow at 12:30pm at Jacksonville National Cemetery 4083 Lannie Rd.
