Gary was born on January 14, 1953 in Blackshear, Georgia where he also attended the Pierce County, GA school system. As a young boy, Gary always dreamed of traveling the world. At the age of 19 he left Blackshear and headed out west to California where he lived for a short period and then joined the US Army. He served for over 20 years proudly and loved the military. Gary boasted of having been to all of the States, and having served and visited numerous foreign countries. While serving in the military, he attended several colleges where he earned his Masters degree. Gary loved spending time with family, cooking, traveling and music. On August 1, 1994, Gary moved his family to Jacksonville, Florida after retiring from his final duty station in Vilseck, Germany. Florida became his family home and they raised their family here and Gary became very active in the community and mentored to numerous young people.
Gary was preceded in death by both of his parents, Mr. Lester Alfred Moses and Mrs. Margaret Surrency-Stanley, also by several siblings, aunts, uncles and grandparents.
Gary leaves to celebrate his life, his wife, Millie E. Surrency; sons, Joey (Katherine) and Brandon (Katy), all of Jacksonville, Florida, son, Gary L.Surrency, Jr. of Monterey, California, James of Leesburg, Florida, and daughter, Krystal (Frank) of Orange City, Florida; maternal aunt, Olynthia Scott, of Waycross, GA; maternal siblings, Theodore (Vicki) and Deborah, both of Macclenny, Florida and Paternal siblings: Sylvestor and Richard Moses of Hinesville, Georgia; 8 Grandchildren and 3 Great-Grandchildren along with a host of Nieces, Nephews, cousins and Friends.
Visitation will be held from 11am-12pm on Monday, April 2nd in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. A Graveside Service will follow at 1:30pm on Monday, April 2nd in Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd 32218.
