Doyle Leighton Cromer Jr, age 85, passed away in St. Augustine on Sunday, March 11, 2018. Doyle was a Jacksonville native and spent most of his life here. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1950 and served his country in the Korean Conflict. Upon his return, he met and fell in love with his wife of 29 years Mary Flynn -- together they had five children. Doyle was a member of Assumption Catholic Church and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1951. He was also an avid FSU Seminole, beginning when he was a student in Tallahassee in the 1950s. He was employed by the US Postal Service as a letter carrier and retired in 1990. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting throughout his life.
Doyle was predeceased by his parents, Doyle Sr. and Estelle C. Cromer, and his wife, Mary Flynn Cromer. He is survived by his 5 children, Cathy, Doyle III (Melissa), Charles, Maggie (Steve), and Kelly (Rob) all of Jacksonville. He also is survived by his sister, Mary Catherine Sandlin (Greg) of Sarasota; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren (and 2 on the way), and many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive visitors at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32207 on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 6-7:00pm. A Catholic Rosary will follow at 7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception, 121 E Duval St., Jacksonville, FL 32202 on Friday morning at 10:00 am with burial following the Mass at Oaklawn Cemetery.
The family would like to express our deep appreciation to the staff of the Clyde E. Lassen Veterans Nursing Home in St Augustine for their compassion and caring of our Dad the last 6 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Children’s Home Society of Florida.
