Doris Guy passed away on May 13, 2020, a short time after the recurrence of breast cancer. Mom (I can’t call her “Doris”) passed peacefully, respected by a team that focused on her dignity and safety. I am comforted by the notion that she is reunited with Jerry (And I really can’t call him “Jerry”) and is no longer in the pain that plagued her for the last few years of her life.
Many of you reached out and shared wonderful memories of Mom. A couple of words you shared about her: regal; loving; compassionate; wickedly funny; kind. Mom was an endless well of compassion - she always knew how to comfort those in crisis and celebrate joy. And always with perfect hair and lipstick.
She did not want a funeral and I am honoring that wish. Mom would encourage each of you to celebrate her in your own special way, whether it’s remembering fun times at the Greenland Road house, road trips, Friday night dinners or coffee on the back porch. She was grateful for the laughter and the tears she shared with each of you.
In the last few years, Mom spent a lot of time telling me stories of her life with Dad. It was a rollercoaster that took her across the world and back to her home with family and friends which was her favorite place of all. I think often of her standing in the kitchen quietly listening to the chaos around her. And saving her exactly-the-right-time, exactly-the-right-sentiment to chime in at the perfect moment. A lot of life’s problems were soothed over that breakfast bar. For all of us.
In lieu of a service, I created a fund in her memory at Mayo Clinic benefiting the Breast Center as each person there was a wonderful partner in caring for someone who cared for so many. Should you donate, please indicate the gift is “in memory of Doris Guy.” You may call 1-855-852-8129; go on line at https://philanthropy.mayoclinic.org/donatemc; or mail a check to made payable to “Mayo Clinic” to Mayo Clinic Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME OF MANDARIN, 11801 San Jose Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32223. www.hgmandarin.com (904) 288-0025.
