David was born on in Coronado California on the San Diego Naval base, beginning a lifelong love for the military and a commitment to service. The family moved from California to the suburbs of Washington DC where he spent most of his youth. He graduated from Ole Miss with a master’s degree in teaching and launched his career as a professor of History and Political Science at the Florida Junior College in Jacksonville, FL. In addition to his skill for teaching, he served in the USMC Reserves for a full 20 years, ultimately being honorably discharged with career high rank of Chief Warrant Officer, and his final assignment at the JAX NAS Flying Gators squadron.
Beyond his achievements at teaching and serving his country, he is most loved for his dedication to both his family and his church. Jean Forney was the love of his life and together they blended a “perfectly imperfect” family of 5 children and 9 grandchildren. David and Jean’s love for each other and the Lord was a beautiful lesson for us all and each of us feel incredibly blessed to have been the recipients of their love, wisdom, and faith. Jean preceded David in death in 2014 and we rejoice in them being together again.
Most will remember David’s quirky sense of humor, and he proudly claimed that “people think I’m weird. I love it”. Whether it was wearing an Easter Bunny costume to work to hand out candy, making up stories about the mice that lived in his workshop, or obsessively collecting books from estate sales that would “be perfect for ____”, he took great pleasure in making others laugh.
Services for David will be held at Grace Anglican Church on Fleming Island, where he faithfully served and attended for many years, on Wednesday March 15th. Following the service, he will be buried alongside Jean at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
