Carrie Elaine Doan was born in St. Augustine, Fl. on November 12, 1957 to parents Mary and Jerry Doan. She was the youngest of 3 children, her older sisters being Laura and Debbie. She grew up in Palatka, FL with her family but has also lived in Wichita, Kansas and Merritt Island. Elaine graduated from Palatka South High in 1975. She worked as a waitress in her father’s restaurant, Jerry’s Drive-In, before she started work as a Travel Agent out of high school. Elaine met her future husband, Wayne Mitchell, in 1980 and eventually moved to Denver Co. with him. They became engaged in March of 1982 and got married on October 16, 1982 in Palatka. The couple moved to Jacksonville, Fl. in 1984. The couple was blessed with two children: Darrell Wayne Mitchell born on November 24, 1985 and Stephanie Elaine Mitchell born on October 6, 1988. Elaine continued her work as a travel agent as well as being a loving wife and mother. The family became members of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church and volunteered with the baseball and basketball programs for 15 years. Through her job she was able to travel the world and continued working until May 2012. After being sick off and on for months in January of 2013 Elaine was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. She decided to fight the cancer rigorously. She went to weekly chemo treatments and numerous hospital stays during the year. Her courageous battle with cancer and pneumonia ended on Monday, November 25, 2013.
