Betty D. Flora Taylor passed away peacefully on Monday, December 6, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. A long-time resident of Jacksonville, Betty was born in Pocahontas County, West Virginia on August 16, 1925. Before her 18th birthday, she went to work for the War Department at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Betty had a long career with several agencies of the Federal Government, her longest tenure being with The Social Security Administration, from which she retired in 1985. A member of Lakewood United Methodist Church, she was also active in The Eastern Star and The Daughters of the Nile.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Deputy and Grace Reed and two husbands, A.L. “Pete” Flora and Gilbert G. Taylor.
She is survived by one son, Robert Flora (Delaine), two grandsons, David Flora and Brian Flora, one sister, Louise D. Larch, one nephew, Michael Surbaugh (Carolyn), two nieces, Patsy Hedrick (Walt), and Betty Ann Surbaugh and several cousins and great nieces and nephews. She will also be dearly missed by two step daughters, Lois Lambing and Lynne Chandler (Jim), five step grand children and seven step great grandchildren who she loved like her own.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 10 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Hendricks Chapel, 4115 Hendricks Avenue. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Hendricks Chapel. Burial in Oaklawn Cemetery will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Betty’s honor to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
