Dr. Augustus Emmett Anderson, Jr. went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 1, 2021, another tragic casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic. A Jacksonville native, he was born December 28, 1923, the oldest of three siblings. He graduated from Landon High School, where he ran track and participated in the amateur boxing Golden Gloves competition.
He attended Emory University in Georgia for pre-medicine as part of the V-12 Navy College Training Program during WWII. For the next four years, he attended Tulane University Medical School where he was awarded membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha academic honor society. He completed his post graduate training at Charity and V.A. Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.
In 1953, he returned to Jacksonville, Florida to establish a private practice in internal medicine with a specialty in pulmonary diseases. He was a founding member of the Baptist Memorial Medical Staff. He practiced well into his nineties and cared for patients at Baptist Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital, where he served as President of the Medical Staff in 1963 and 1964. For four decades, he performed disability determination for the Department of Labor. In 1984, he became Medical Director of River Garden Senior Services and served in that capacity through 1998.
He loved his family, enjoyed fast cars, antique clocks, woodworking, and oil painting. He was passionate for scientific research and considered publishing approximately 100 peer review articles in medical and scientific magazines among his life’s proudest accomplishments.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents, Alma Hardee Anderson and Augustus Emmett Anderson, Sr.; sister, Mary Katherine Bean, and his brother, William Earl Anderson; wife Elsie Mae Buquet Anderson (1948-1966); wife Sandra Dorman Anderson (1972-1996); and wife Joyce M. Jones Anderson (1998-2017); Andy is survived by his son William Fredrick Anderson (Sharon); son Robert Les Anderson; son Augustus Emmett Anderson III (Allyson); daughter Renee Marie Halverson (Mark); daughter Robin Lucille Anderson; grandchildren Amy Elizabeth Thomas (Scott); Jonathan Anderson, Taylor Anderson, Stephanie Anderson, Robby Anderson, Mary Alice Anderson (Kyle Wallace), Carolyn Anderson Williams (Matt), Augustus Emmett Anderson IV, Hillary Anne Nolan (Bradley), Morella Grace Jansheski, Jack Anderson, and Harmon Jansheski; greatgrandchildren Emory Thomas, Harvest Nolan, and Wells Nolan; nieces Carol Bean, Janis Bean Durham (Larry), Suzy Bean and nephew Richard L. Bean (Jennifer); nieces Sandra Anderson Pogue, Dorothy Anderson Thompson (Bill), and Cathy Anderson Laing (David).
